The 1997 Track & Field News Female Athlete of the Year, Marion Jones,
will highlight the 40th annual Mt. SAC Relays. Jones was a double gold medalist
in last year's World Championships, capturing both the 100 and 200 meter
events. Southern California fans may well remember her exploits as a prep
at both Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks High School. She
was the high school Athlete of the Year in both 1991 and 1992. Last year
Jones returned to track after finishing a basketball career at North Carolina,
where she helped win 3 ACC titles as well as a national championship. Many
other great athletes will be competing at the 40th annual Mt. SAC Relays.
Track and field fans will not want to miss this one!
Once again, sprinting was the name of the game at the 39th annual Mt. SAC
Relays. Los Angeles native Michael Marsh captured the 100 with a wind-aided
9.87, running away from Tim Montgomery and Maurice Greene, both of whom also
dipped under 10 seconds. The great Carl Lewis made his last appearance as
an athlete at Mt. SAC a memorable one by running on two world leading relay
teams, the 4x100 and sprint medley, and an all-star team from Nike captured
the 4x400 in an American leading 3:01.33. Other strong performances included
a PR 1:46.33 by Balazs Tolgyesi in the 800, a 27-9 1/4 long jump by Joe Greene
and a fine shot-discuss double by John Godina who tossed 69-1 1/2 and 213-1.
On the distaff side, Regina Jacobs won the 5000 in 15:44.50, Kajsa Berqvist
captured the high jump with a leap of 6-4 1/4, and Stacy Dragila and Dawn
Ellerbe both established new American records in the pole vault (13-11) and
hammer (210-8) respectively.
The 40th annual meet will showcase many of these great athletes once again. Many World Championship medalists from Athens will compete. This will be the only opportunity for track and field fans to see these athletes in Southern California in 1998.
Great collegiate teams will also be showcased. Local powers UCLA and USC will compete against Stanford, California, Arkansas, Arizona, Missouri and Ohio State, just to name a few.
