Career Highlights

At the 1962 Relays, the great ASU team of Mike Barrick, Ron Freeman, Henry Carr and Ulis Williams set a new collegiate record of 3:07.5. The same team topped themselves at the 1963 Relays by breaking the World Record with a time of 3:04.5.

Carr went on to win two gold medals at the 1964 Olympics: as champion of the 200m (20.3), and as the anchor leg of the 4X400m relay team, which set a new world record of 3:00.7 (Carr's split: 44.5). He also was NCAA champ at 220y (20.5) in 1963. Williams was a two-time NCAA Champion at 440y ('63: 45.8; '64: 45.9), and also won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the 4X400m relay (3rd leg, 45.4). He finished 5th (46.0) in the '64 Olympics 400m final.

  • 1962: 3:07.5 CR
  • 1963: 3:04.5 WR
The Mile Relay did not become part of the NCAA Championship program until 1964, so Arizona State's team did not have an opportunity to contend for a national title.
