While a student at USC, Rex won the first four intermediate hurdles titles contested at the Mt. SAC Relays. He capped his college career by winning both the NCAA and U.S. National Championships in 1963. This proved to be the perfect lead-in to the Olympic year of 1964. Rex set a world record at the Olympic Trials, then won the gold medal in Tokyo with a commanding performance in which he beat his nearest competitor by 0.5 seconds.
