Francie's career tracked the growth in women's distance events. In 1972 and 1976 she qualified for the U.S. Olympic team at 1500m. At those Games, 1500m was the longest distance race that women contested. She moved up and qualified for the U.S. Olympic team at 10000m for the 1988 Games, the first time women competed at this distance. Her 5th place showing in Seoul was her best performance at the Olympics. Francie made her final Olympic team in 1992, where she finished 12th in the marathon. It was at these Games that Francie was picked by her teammates to carry the American flag during the opening ceremony. Francie demonstrated her great range at the Relays over the years, winning a total of six titles at distances from 800m to 3000m. Her range was also on display as she swept 10 national championships and broke 16 American Records at distances from 1500m to 10000m. Francie is now the cross-country coach for the men's and women's programs at Southwestern University. Born: 1952 College: UCLA |
